Description: This review is about arlo-login or Ring Spotlight Cam Battery. We compare some of the most popular consumer IP security cameras. In the past we’ve talked ring vs nest vs Arlo, but today we focus more on Ring specifically and try to unearth if it’s the best IP security camera or best outdoor security camera.
I’m Jeff Rizzo from RIZKNOWS.com. Today we’re writing a review of the ring spotlight cam battery and we’re also going to compare it to the nest cam outdoor which I have in my house and the Arlo Pro two cameras which Matt uses at his house.
I have been using this for several months. I’ve got a good idea of what you should expect from this camera. The idea is that it is basically going to record people that walk by and then it’s going to hit them BAM with some lights. Because it’s got the lights on the side of the camera.
The thing that differentiates this camera is the fact that it’s battery-operated. You don’t need any cables or any wire. We’re going to cover pros and cons of what we think of the camera and our overall verdict on the ring spotlight cam battery.
First let’s cover pricing. The ring spotlight cam battery has an MSRP of $200 which I don’t think is that expensive for an IP security camera. It’s coincidentally the same price as the nest camp outdoor.
This is battery-operated which has a bunch of features that you’re going to be interested in. It’s around the same price as nests mid-level outdoor camera. Nobody is going to be too concerned with the price.

We’re going to go over the major elements of stuff. The first thing is design and setup. In terms of setting up, the camera is easy to do it. You basically pop in the battery and make sure it’s charged up. Then you follow the instructions within that ring app.
It’s easy like Dylan behind the camera. He managed to do it in a matter of minutes. Nobody is going to have a problem. It’s got a relatively easy set up process. When you go to mount it on to the side of your house or wherever you mount it, it’s very easy.
It has a ball and socket hinge. You can rotate it at any direction you want. You can tighten the screw to make sure that it’s secure. It is weather resistant as well down to negative 5 degrees Fahrenheit to degrees Fahrenheit.
For most people, you should be fine as long as it’s not throughout the entire year exposed to those temperatures. But if you live in Alaska or maybe Phoenix Arizona, you may want to call customer service and ask them how will it do in my climate. Because I don’t live in those locations and I don’t know how often in Alaska it gets down below negative five and I don’t know how often it gets above 120 in Phoenix.
It is weather resistant for most people. But if you’re all in opposite sides of the spectrum, you have to check with our customer service. I haven’t had any issues with the durability or the weather proofing.
It is in my backyard and it stays there 24/7. I’ve had any movement in terms of the ball and hinge. I tightened it down so it’s not being blown around by the wind. It has a secure fit even though you wouldn’t expect that from this camera. Because it doesn’t look like the most secure system for the design of the camera.
I think it’s clever. So they have bright lights on the sides. That’s where you get the spotlight name. Those are on the side and on the bottom. You have the motion detection and in the front of it obviously is the camera.
It is a hundred and forty degree wide angle lens. We’ve seen lenses that are more wide-angle. But this one covers the majority of my backyard and there’s no blind spot from where I want it to record. Obviously I would need more cameras if I want to cover my entire property.
I have a very small backyard, very modest home, probably an under-average sized home and probably under advertised backyard. It covers the entire backyard with no issues at 140 degrees wide angle lens.
One thing that I appreciate about the camera is the battery. It comes with one battery. It is removable and you charge it via micro USB. I’ve been operating with one battery and it’s been fine. however the battery life depends on your settings within the notifications section.
The more notifications you have on, the more you have those running all day long. A it’s going to be incredibly annoying and B it’s going to drain your battery life quickly. When I had those switched on and the sensitivity turned way up, I’d get every single notification.
I got one month of battery life and now I’m probably into my second or third month. I’m still at the last time. I checked 91% battery life. I turned down the notifications and your battery life is going to go up dramatically.
You end up getting a second battery. Because it can fit. I would not be surprised for you to report that you got six months of battery life or more. I haven’t had it for six months but I wouldn’t be surprised if you go all the way up.
Let’s talk about video quality. That’s obviously very important. Video quality is going to depend heavily on your Wi-Fi connection. It doesn’t work with five gigahertz Wi-Fi. It’s 2.4 unfortunately. You need to make sure that wherever your going to put it you has a strong Wi-Fi signal.
For me in my backyard it isn’t the strongest Wi-Fi signal. It’s not full bars and therefore the video quality frequently can be way less than what it should be. It should be 1080p full-hd and very clear like my ring video doorbell Pro. That is on my front yard which is close to my Wi-Fi. So it gets a great signal.
With the spotlight cam battery, it’s going to depend on the location of your house. If you have a great signal, you’ll probably get that full HD quality. If you don’t, you should expect a lot of interruptions and a lot of graininess pixelation.
Sometimes it will be clear. Other times it won’t be that good for you. That will limit what you can do with the camera. It will limit how much you can connect to it and what type of clarity you’re going to get from the footage.
You should check your Wi-Fi settings before you go yelling at ring. Because it’s not their fault. A lot of these cameras have problems with connections and clarity. You’re probably going to get the same thing with this camera. Half my fault maybe half their fault.
On top of that as you probably expected it has night vision. That’s helped out by the fact that has those lights. You get a pretty good clarity at night especially when those lights pop on. There’s two-way audio which is standard for a lot of these cameras.
That depends a lot on your Wi-Fi signal. It’s going to lag if you go to talk to somebody and you don’t have a really good Wi-Fi signal. It all comes down to that Wi-Fi signal. I can’t say it enough.
One of the things I’ve been disappointed about with ringing products is that even with a strong Wi-Fi signal there’s a inconsistent Lag to do with the two-way audio. My video doorbell Pro in my front yard next to my Wi-Fi doesn’t work well too. The same issue is hit or miss.
If you want to get a better Wi-Fi signal, you should look into that ring chime Pro or the ring chime that not only is an extender for your doorbell but is a Wi-Fi range extender. So that it can help you with your Wi-Fi signal.
I should probably put that in my hallway or in my bedroom to make it a little bit closer to this camera.
The next thing is notification. As I mentioned before it has that motion sensor and you can adjust both the sensitivity and the range of it within the mobile app. If you don’t want it to extend all the way across your yard, you can change that.
If you want to get fewer notifications, you can change that as well. You can set up a schedule so that you don’t get notifications when you’re home. For example you want the notifications when you’re gone, this is going to require you to set up a motion activity zone. It’s easy within the mobile app.
You can set up specific areas that you get notifications. You can have a flag or something in your backyard and it’s constantly moving. You’re getting hit up all day long from the notifications. You can carve that area out so you don’t get the notifications for that area. I like the fact that they have those motion zones. That’s a clever thing to add.
One thing they wanted to incorporate that I haven’t seen incorporated into older ring products is a siren. You have to manually enable it when you’re in the Live View settings. It is incredibly loud and will hopefully scare off anybody that’s trying to steal stuff out of your backyard or try and get into your house.
It’s 110 decibels and it works very well. It can get annoyingly loud for obvious reasons. You can log in from any ring mobile app and then you can check in on what’s happening in your house in real time. Assuming that this has a good Wi-Fi signal and it’s connected to that Wi-Fi, you can peer into what’s happening in your backyard or side yard or whatever you want.
I also should mention the storage plan. When you don’t buy a storage plan, you get the notifications when somebody walks by or with your doorbell when somebody rings, it you don’t get to look back on any prior footage. But if you pay $3 per month or $30 per year per camera, you can peer back.
It’s 60 days worth of footage. You can look back on it. It’s not going to be continuous recording but you can see when somebody rang your doorbell or in this case when the lights flashed or somebody walked by or it’s sensed motion.
You will get those event based notifications. Those will be saved within the cloud. You can access them from any ring mobile app. It’s helpful. It’s a lot more affordable than some of the other plans from other brands.
If you have a bunch of these cameras, you may consider that hundred dollar per year plan and that way you can have unlimited cameras and you could store all the footage and check it out later. It’s still event based not continuous recording though.
I like the camera. It’s obviously not perfect but there’s a lot to like about it. For 200 bucks it isn’t expensive especially compared to the nest cam outdoor which I mentioned before. It obviously has some downsides and personally I’m going to have to get that ring chime Pro to extend a Wi-Fi.
It isn’t a must-have for people. But if you’re interested in investing in the ring ecosystem and you want to get a doorbell, this is probably their best camera. Battery life is good. You can put in two batteries. It’s a good product in terms of how it compares to nest cam outdoor.
You’re talking wired versus Wireless. The wired option might be better if you are using it at your cabin and you are concerned with battery life. That might be better. Ring also has a wired option and other than that similar stuff notifications and 1080p.
You get a lot more out of ring products for free than you are with nest forces almost everybody to pay $10 per month per camera. If you’re already invested in nasco nest, if you don’t have anything yet or you already have a ring product, ring makes more sense compared to the Arlo pro tools.
It gets a little bit more hairy. Because this is more affordable than the Arlo two pro cameras. It is more affordable but if you’re going to get a whole array of cameras, it may make sense to get Arlo.
Because you get seven days of free cloud storage with those. That is event based as well. They are both wired or wireless, the same cameras wired or wireless and indoor or outdoors. There’s a lot of versatility with Arlo that you probably won’t get with ring.
On top of that if you get the Arlo Pro two cameras, you get a look-back feature. You can look back and see what happened before the event. It gives you a little bit more context. But if you use Arlo pro two in the wired version you get that look-back feature and you can get continuous recording.
It comes down to brands. Are you interested in getting many cameras? Check out Arlo pro two. Those are good versatile cameras. If you’re at all interested in a ring, you could save a little bit of money going with ring. It’s still reputable of company. They make some good products. But getting your Wi-Fi good is the biggest thing.
