What makes you the best candidate for the mayor’s position in 96? What do you do to convince voters they should vote for you on Election Day?
I have 10 years previous experience as mayor of 96. I’m thoroughly familiar with the operations of the town, there have been changes since I was in office. My knowledge of the town function and operation in all departments qualifies me.
I haven’t been member of the county level. Currently I’m a member of the board of zoning appeals, along with that knowing how to manage the town makes me qualified for being there. Secondly, the important thing is that I am in my retirement and have the opportunity to serve as a full-time mayor.
You can give us insight on how you will make a positive improvement on it. Majority of small towns are limited, that’s the problem we have in 96. We don’t have any way to generate revenue other than to generate it through taxes and rebates from people in power company. South Carolina would give rebates on some items.
We need more businesses in 96. We want to attract those visitors to the town of 96 to stop and shop. That is our background, that is our history, that is our heritage. Do you agree with having town council members occupying seats on other committees such as a Chamber of Commerce or the historic development association?
Let me give you a situation or an example. The Historic Association votes to take on some action requiring a request from the town for funds, currently you have two members on the town council about the vote that are also members of the HDA, you need to explain how you feel about this situation, is it a good practice or bad?
It’s fine. You need the liaison between the council and those other entities in 96 to know what goes on with each entity. You need to know something about the Chamber of Commerce and Development Commission. You need those people that can keep the counsel advised as to what’s going on. There are six members on own counsel and it takes the entire council to approve anything.
With one or two members being on different groups, Chamber Commerce and Historical Development Commission cannot control what council approves. They have to let the other members approve it. Those other entities operate separately from the town, each one makes their own decisions, they have their own boats, they approve whatever comes before them, they don’t have to get approval from the council.
It’s good to have those people from Council on those committees. You don’t get too many things on the different groups. I don’t know truthfully, I don’t see any problem with it.
Ordinances have been a hot topic lately here in 96, but someone says that the town has not been fair on the enforcement of them, what is your take on this situation about the ordinances? How should the town handle the ordinate situation?
Ordinances have always been an issue in the dome of 96, there are ordinances on the books to control about everything that occurs in 96 from noise, speeding to public drunk. The ordinances should be enforced, they haven’t been over the years, they have not been enforced.
You should be selective about what has been enforced, some things are overlooked. In my previous administrations, one of the hot issues is that the junk cars parked in people’s yards and in their houses. We tried to enforce that, it lasted for a while, it would be on the wayside.
The ordinances are there, they should be enforced. It would be a full-time job for the police department and the mayor. There are some ordinances that there should be remain some leeway and decisions. At any time, the council can come back in and do whatever they want to do. The ordinances should be enforced, let’s have common sense about them. We should look at the situation very closely, we should make a decision on what needs to be done.
