Description: This passage is mainly about atmos energy logi. In this passage, we can know that Atmos Energy is preparing to cut off gas to the 2800 homes and we know a little bit more about the possible causes of the event.
We begin with breaking news that Atmos energy sets to cut off natural gas service to 2800 homes in Northwest Dallas in the next hour, the company as well a city and county leaders say that the move is out of an abundance of caution, it comes after a deadly house explosion and hundreds of evacuations in the past few days.
We know that we have inconvenience, but we’re also committed to replacing the entire system, we have never seen the circumstances that we have seen this week, that’s what’s unique about it, good morning we’re glad that you’re with us, I’m Russ McCaskill and I’m Karen Borga, the planned outage will last up to three weeks.
Here is the area, it will stretch from Walnut Hill to Northwest Highway and from Webb Chapel to Lake Mont, chopper 11 is live over the affected area this morning, Atmos Energy crews and city of Dallas volunteers are going door to door warning residents about the planned outage and explaining people’s options.
You can see that a crew are gathering as they walk from door to door, and we have live team coverage this morning starting with Brittney Jeffers who is at that early morning news conference, she’s live at the Walnut Hill rec center in Dallas with more on this.
For the past six days we’ve heard from people in the community that they’ve been demanding answers from Atmos, and as you have mentioned this morning it is 5 a.m. when they learn that they can be without gas for three weeks, and many of them say that now they have to come up with some new arrangements, and this can take place here in an hour.
We will take the step of shutting down this system before the Sun is up, it’s an announcement from Atmos and city officials that 3000 homes in Northwest Dallas will be without gas by noon, the crews will be working 24 hours a day to replace the mains and service lines in the area meaning that homeowners have to take a good look at their options.
They can choose to stay in their homes or with friends or family, I recognize that it’s an extreme hardship for people to be without gas for an extended period of time, they can contact Atmos, there is opportunity to get vouchers to go to hotels and get other financial assistance from Atmos, it isn’t about the expenses that people will have to incur.
The homeowners such as Ellen Harris says that her list of questions for Atmos is growing, I’m concerned about the safety in the neighborhood with so many people perhaps leaving their homes, they are going to be patrolling the area, how we are going to get updates is that there is going to be a website built for us to go, where we will get current up-to-date information.
So if people have immediate questions that they want to answer it, now they can go to that command center that’s set up on Webb Chapel, later today at 4 o’clock they can come here to the Walnut Hill recreation center or the recreation center Bachman lake, where there will be Atmos officials here as well as Dallas officials who can answer those questions for you.
We’re learning a little bit more about the possible causes to all this and how the recent wet weather is may have played a role, what are officials saying? I must tell you that this morning this is after a preliminary investigation, they’re calling this a unique situation, they say that the rain plays a factor in this as well as what they call geological shifts underground.
They say that it has created some leaks in the system, they say that when all of this is replaced, though it will be steel pipes that are replaced with state-of-the-art PVC pipes. This is Brittany Alice from CBS 11 News.
