I’m going to show you how to anchor your furniture to a wall so that it’s safer for everyone. There are some examples of anchor kits that come with new furniture,we have some aftermarket kits that you might want to purchase in case you’re installing older furniture or your furniture is not currently anchored. There are two of them that we like.
This one has a braided steel cable and thick metal brackets so that would be a very strong anchor, this one also has metal brackets and a strong nylon strap. the next thing to consider is that what type of wall construction you have. This wall is in various stages of construction,it’s fastened to the stud with screws every six to eight inches and then covered with a layer of compound.
The screws are going to help you locate the studs when it comes time to do that. You may have masonry walls, that could be a much more complicated installation process,we’re going to talk about wood framed and metal frame structures at this point. Now I’m going to find the studs, you should always anchor your furniture straight into a stud, don’t anchor into it the drywall.
You can use a stud finder to find the next stud or you can measure 16 inches away,we’re going to measure the height of the furniture,we have 31 inches,we’ll transfer that height to the wall and then we’ll measure 8 inches below that. According to the manufacturer’s instructions, you can choose a drill bit that is the same size as the shaft of the screw.
The screw threads extend beyond the drill bit and they’ll bite into the wood as they’ll go into the stud. If you’re screwing into metal studs, you need to use drywall screws. We’re going to mark the hole,we’ll drill the hole into the stud through the drywall into the stud.
I’m going to put this screw into the stud with a number two phillips bit. We have the brackets attached to the wall,it’s time to locate the furniture, you don’t have to Center the dresser on the wall anchors, there is some flexibility,it’s fine if you place it a little off-center.
The manufacturer recommends that you need to always anchor the bracket in the furniture to solid wood pieces, this is often very thin, you need to go into a top solid piece. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s instructions,in this case, they need the short anchor attached to the wall and the long strap attached to the bureau, the brackets need to be oriented in the proper fashion so that anchor works properly. We’re going to slide the dresser up to the wall. As we do that,we’ll snug it up and tighten it in place, that dresser is not going anywhere.
