Description: This article is going to show you how to create a ReadWorks digital account for your classroom and how to assign some comprehension passages to your students from grades K to twelve.
Today I’m going to show you how to create a ReadWorks digital account for your classroom and how to assign some comprehension passages to your students from grades K to twelve.
So if you don’t have a ReadWorks digital account, first you go to the ReadWorks digital page, click on I Am A Teacher and sign up. You are going to start creating your account by using you any email you want and creating a password, click the sign up button. Then choose the school you are at, the grade and subject you are teaching, if you are teaching multiple grades and subjects, you can choose them all. Then click on Get Started.
You can search by subjects, by topic. If you want to assign a passage on a certain topic, you can search it and different passages will pop up. They will give you grade levels, the Lexile level and they will tell you informational text, then it will the vocabulary of the passage that can be assigned to use throughout the assignment. So here is the place where the students can write a short answer. If you want to assign this to your class, you can click on assign. Or you can save it to your like list for your further teaching.
In this passage, you can see that the details are on the right, it shows you the standards, the related passages, the vocabulary that is contained in the passage, the grade, the number of words, the lexile level. There is a tab here called question sets which contains a mix of multiple choice and short answer questions. So you can either print them out and put the article on the board and let them answer or you can click assign.
To create a class, you can click on the grade, type in the class name. If your students have already have Google accounts, you can type in each of their emails and invite with Google. Or you can add the students’ name to the roster. Then a password will pop up and if you want to add more students, you can click on Add More Students.
You need to put the code which is unique for each class on the board. Then the students can copy it and go to DigitalReadWorks.org/student, click where it says I Am A Student, and they shall enter the class code. Once they do it, they don’t have to do it again.
Now I’m going to show you how students can submit and how you can grade their submissions from articles. To create a new assignment, you are going to assignments or find articles. Find the one that is suitable, then click assign. Choose what you want to assign to students, article, vocabulary or comprehensive questions. You can choose to assign to the whole class or specific students. Then choose the date you want to assign. At last click go to assignments.
Here you can see how many students have submitted, here you can see the class results and when they submit their answers, it will automatically grade all of the multiple-choice questions and it will show you the percentage of the answers of the multiple-choice questions.
Now if you want to go to written answers, you can see the standard answer of the question, and you can see the answers of students. You can click on the correct if the student answered right. If not, you can click on the percent or incorrect. Then you can move on to the next question.
Some of the passages may also have inferencing/drawing conclusions questions. It will show you the percentage of the answers of the whole class on multiple choices as well as who got right and who got wrong.
Over here on the right where it says total, you can see the total drawing on comprehension questions, it will give you a column of what the result is. And this is the inferencing and drawing conclusion section, it gives you a grade. So you can calculate the average of two columns and create a grade to put in the grade book.
So if there are some students that are doing bad on the passage, you can click reassign to have them revise and they can focus on the written answers. Now if the student is doing poorly on several aspects, you can click redo and all the answers will be cleared and the student will be notified when he logs on the ReadWorks digital.
You can go back to the past, see the assignments that you have submitted, make a comment on the answer of the student and ask him to revise the answer, choose the date you want to submit
And I think this is very useful for the students because they can work on their own pace and independently, teachers can also see the results, if the students are doing poorly, the teacher can print out the assignment and let them see the results.
