How Garage Doors Work And Repair Tutorial

Today I want to do a general overview of all the parts on a garage door and those parts on most garage door openers. I will start out with the track of the garage door. We have the horizontal track,this mounts to angle iron hangs from your ceiling. This is 12 inch radius track,how you can tell that? This piece of angle comes to it,it doesn’t come all the way up to this bracket,it’s halfway up to this bracket.

This bracket is called a flag bracket,this is 15 inch radius,this angle piece would be mounted all the way to the top of the flag bracket,so your drums will be mounted higher. Secondly,this is your flag bracket mounting to their flag bracket,your trick horizontal track is your M bearing plate,that holds all the way to the garage door.

That is your drums,these are 8 foot tall door,they make them for 12 foot high doors and even taller. You’ve your torsion cables,there is your torsion shaft,it will come down. There’s your vertical track,these are two inch tracks,this is industry standard,they also make a 3-inch track,the rollers are going to be smaller than two inches,they’re going to be more like three-quarters to fit in that track.

But they call them two inch rollers because it fits in a two inch track. From there,you have your top bracket residential. Top bracket is standard,you’ll see commercial top brackets which are a little wider and a lot taller,they stick out farther.

You have rollers in there,these are sealed in thirteen ball rollers,they are nylon coated. These are 14 gauge hinges,this is what we sell on our site,they’re commercial grade hinge,this is the only thing we use on garage doors,they will add a lot of stability to your garage door,a lot of times they’ll use 810 gate changes and they’re flimsy,you’ll see them fatigue and they’ll crack that.

These are numbered,the number three is a 7-foot tall door,this is number two,these are 14 gauge hinges,you have struts on your,these add reinforcements to your door so your door doesn’t buckle in the middle. That may go the span of the garage door and make them like an 18-foot door. You have 11 struts on your garage door.

For a 16-foot door,you have 15 struts,they make them in 2-inch struts and that’s how far they stand away from the garage door,they are three-inch,the three-inch is going to be a little stronger,but it’s not used to except in more highway. In situations,your bottom bracket is where your cables attached to down here,all the tension is on that cable and on this bottom bracket,so you don’t need to take the screws out of this bottom bracket unless you have the tension off the cables.

It’ll shoot up and it will hurt you. On your garage door, you have the counterbalance system. There is the torsion spring,there’s the extension spring,those are not very common in the industry. This door has torsion springs,you can have one torsion spring,occasionally,you’ll see three or four but most common you can see one or two torsion springs.

You have your stationary cone,this cone stays stationary,at the other end,you have your winding cone,the springs mount to your center bracket or Center anchor plate,it mounts to your header board with some lags. You have an operator bracket,not every door has this,this adds a lot of strength because it mounts underneath of the top strut,it mounts to the hinge.

You’re distributing the workload,you can see all the tension that’s put on the door over a bigger area,it goes all the way up and down to this top panel. Since it goes under the strut,this adds a lot of strength to your garage door. You can see that the center hinges on this door,they use 18 gauge hinges,it’s fine to use them on the center hinges. I’m not a big fan of it,I’d rather use 14 gauge hinges.

They are more stronger,they’re going to flex and make everything more quieter compare with other type of spring system that you could have. Torsion spring is an extension spring,t stretches out instead winding up and down. You have your cables running up the track,there will be a three inch pulley,sometimes it will be a four inch pulley,the cable runs over that.

You’ll have a spring attached to this back angle liner,you’ll have a pulley attached to end of the spring,it will come back and attach to the track. When your doors go down the spring,it will stretch out. You’ll have one of them on each side when the doors up,they are smaller.

There are so many different models,there’s a general overview,you’re going to use your arm,that is part of your garage door opener,it attaches to your operator bracket or they’ll also have the openers come with a smaller operator attachment that attaches to the door. You’re going to have your emergency disconnect,it attaches to your opener trolley or carriage so you can disengage and raise the door manually.

You have your opener rail,usually there’s a major Steel,they’re aluminum,this particular opener has a belt drive on it,it gives you a lot quieter performance over chain drive or screw drive. You have your motor head,your light covers underneath the white beverage of the light bulb. Your circuit can be found on the backside.

An excellent thing is that any openers made after 1996 is required to have photo eyes on it through the safety beams,those are usually mounted anywhere from five inches to ten inches off of the floor,these are adjustable. Most of them have a screw on the back of the front,you can adjust them.

The wiring goes to the back of the motor head,it communicates with the motor and the circuit board. When there’s an obstruction on the wall station or on your garage door opener,you’ll have a single button to raise and lower the door. If you have a wall station,you’ll have an up and down button,you’ll have a light function on it,you can turn the light off and on manually.

Usually you’ll have a switch. You can turn it on by holding it for three to five seconds,in this case,you can flip the switch,it disables the remote and all the wireless devices so the remotes are disabled. If you go on vacation,you’re not going to have somebody break into your house. If they’ve another remote and you don’t want them in there,this is an outdoor keypad,this one is Wireless.

Most of them are wireless,you can type in four to five digit code and then hit the start button,it will communicate with the receiver on the back of the opener or in the opener,it will raise and lower your door,most of them can hold up to five to eight codes,you can have a different code for each member of the family or friends,this is handy if you have kids that are coming in from school and they don’t have a key.

You don’t need to worry about them losing their key,they can get in the garage and get in the house in that way,it’s a handy feature. If you like taking walks,you don’t have to carry your remote or your keys with you.
