Description: It basically talks about Office 365 video which is a highly performant scalable solution embedded in office 365 to truly stream content to the entire enterprise.
Office 365 video is a highly performant scalable solution embedded in office 365 to really truly stream content to the entire enterprise. Let me show you a little bit. We’ve got content at the top that’s curated scroll below will see content that’s popular, this is going to be driven by the office graph, so you get relevant content and also other pinned channels at the top if we go into the channel page,
Some of the scenarios that we’re targeting ,we hope that our customers are going to benefit is using things like you know executive communications like here the executive corner other things like sales and marketing steams being able to share their information and certainly training scenarios OK and office, but video has been around for a few months.
But I know a lot of people are probably wondering what about the cross browser support and flash dependencies, so let me switch over and show you a couple of things that we’re working on from a mobile perspective, this is an iPhone and first thing I’m going to show you is the iPhone app.
This is going to ship into the App Store and it’s a native app running that actually draws content from Azure media services specific for the iPhone, so the same content that we saw on the home page is now here in the spotlight channel, these are the curated content scroll down, you’ll see the popular in the different channels from the back set backstage.
I can navigate to the different channels. I can do a search. I’ll show you one channel the executive corner that we referenced here and here you’ll see that’s the channels curated content and all other videos there last thing.
You can upload a video something that you’ve either pre-recorded and edited maybe a little bit on the phone or you just wanted to take, maybe something that’s right there and raw and uploaded into the channel from a responsive perspective or playing on other players.
Let me show you the other thing, they were working on, so we were in the app here you can see the office 365 video app and now I’m going to shuffle over to the Safari browser the native Safari browser does that support flash no famously.
Obviously, Safari does not support flash,so what you’re going to see here is using the new html5 player to get playback here in the Safari browser, but it also applies to things like the Android Chrome mobile and other smaller and larger devices, so we really get a nice experience.
But what you’re seeing here is the responsive design, so I’ve scaled down to obviously a 4-inch screen here and you can see that we get one column, we get a little bit smaller information and then if we do a quick refresh, you’ll see that I can click here and we’ll get playback and it’s going to playback fullscreen playing back from Azure media services the same that backends the web experience, but here you’re seeing it play on a smaller device.
Obviously, we don’t have that flash dependency anymore and I know there waste also show responsive design on the PC as well, so why don’t you show us how the tablet view might look, so I’m really on anything and you know granted the responsive design means a couple of things when I first drag it out of.
Here you’ll see that we get what that mobile view is and our menu goes down and we get a one column view as I scroll up, you’ll start to get into about a tablet size view, so you can see the player got bigger got a little bit more room and then finally when we get to full size, you’ll see we went and got the player that got much bigger, you can always go full screen, but this responsive design gets us a cross-browser and cross-device.
I know all of this work has been a culmination of different components, so let’s talk about how office 365 video really came about.I’d love to show you more, so office 365 video as part of the next-gen portal strategy and it is our first deliverable into office 365 these are intelligent mobile social and ready to go type portals in the past.
You would have spent about six to nine months building, one of these portals and that’s gluing it all together buying all the technology hosting yourself connecting the third party services and we really wanted to ease that pain, this is something the portal strategy is something we’ve been watching people do for about 10 or 14 years on SharePoint and in office 365 we want to offer them right out of the gate so that they don’t have to build anything.
so where all the components that make office video possible,a lot of Technology and it glues together a lot of third-party services that are outside of of 365 and real the value that you see here and one of the components I talk about is the Azure media services and Azure media services something, that’s been used for the Olympics in 2012 and 2014 it backbones nbc.com.
Anytime you see a video on NBC comm, it’s actually going through Azure media services and we put that same power as one of the main components to run the office 3 solis a–‘s but how do they actually come together well, so let’s run through a couple of scenarios, so I’m going to be an uploader and upload a video, sign in to office 365 and in the user interface whether I’m using a device through an app or a web browser or on a broader a larger PC maybe a 17-inch PC or a Mac or whatnot I’d upload through the browser log into office 365 to the video portal and navigate to a channel and upload what’s actually going to happen.
We’re going to take that video file and put a copy into SharePoint online so that you get good things like you discovery auditing, but also it then triggers a workflow that’s going to send a copy of that over to Azure media services where we’re going to take that same size file.
But then generate a number of different sizes so that ultimately when we have our viewer accessing it, if they have a really nice connection to the Internet, then we’re going to serve them up a higher resolution, they have something, it’s a little bit low or a smaller device then we’re going to serve them a little bit of a smaller video file.
so these all represent different resolutions of the video that Azure media services will create based on your base video,so the other thing that we get from Azure media services they have a really nice thumbnailing service, so you upload a video file and automatically we’re going to get this nice thumbnail, that’s actually going to transfer back into SharePoint online as metadata, so if we have a title, if we’ve got description, we’ve got a nice thumbnail, we start to really get a lot of good characteristics and metadata in SharePoint Online, that really leads us to take all of that metadata and push it down into the office graph which also gets surfaced in delve.
It’s a relevant engine on top of our search engine that provides this nice new experience in delve to deliver you content, that’s highly personalized highly relevant based on people that you interact with and topics that you’re interested in, so we serve that down, so any video file that you upload into the portal is going to be available to the graph surfaced through delve based on who you work with and what interest you have how does Yammer play into this, so Yammer is a really important part.
Once you’ve got a video in the system, our user is going to then access that whether it’s through their phone or through their device and when they go in and they want to share this with a group. If they want to share it with you, they want to share the video on the player page is Yammer in the document discussions, so we’ve got Yammer here and we’ve got the video file.
You can start a conversation in line, you would with a document, what we call document conversations same technology right on the player page panel zooms out you type in your comment pump it up to you Amer and if somebody comes back to the video page ,they’ll see the thread right there in line, but if they’re in that group, they’ll also see that thread and if they want to click back to the video,it is a really nice integration and holistic experience across office 365, so a lot of large organizations are watching people want to really protect their data what does encryption have to do with all of us, so encryption is super important we’ve made a lot of progress in SharePoint Online in exchange online to really focus on encrypting everything.
The whole service is really targeted to be the the most secure that we can make it no different with video files and I drew a bunch of places where we have video files at the end of the day, but everything is encrypted at rest and encrypted and transit not just how we service the video file to move it around, but also during playback which is super important that when you’re on your device or you’re on your PC or Mac.
It’s an encrypted experience and so all of your data is kept highly secure, the nice thing is already built, it’s already part of the office 365 service, you don’t have to build your own service in order house in host videos and the great thing is we’ve shown now the user experience, we’ve talked about how old it works, but I bet all the admins out, there are wondering how they can actually get this running.
Let’s take a look at what it looks like for an end,so one of the first things you want to do as an admin is create a channel, we’re here on the channel page, I’m going to click new channel, I’m going to type in basic title office mechanics and then I’m going to pick a color, I’m going to go with blue and click OK. I’ve done that already just for sake of time and we’re going to click into that.
Once the channel gets raided, another thing you’re going to do is upload videos. I’m going to go in here and upload a couple of videos. I’m going to grab multiple, you can do one or you can do multiple at a time.
If I go in to the admin settings for this channel, you’ll see a number of things that I can do, once we get there, here’s where that name and color that we chose. I can go in here and spotlight different content, so I’ve got a number of videos in here and if I want to highlight a few. I can go in here and select where I want that to show up, so I’m going to put this one in the number one position and I’ll put another one in the number two position.
This is great because you can really control what shows up at the top of the screen and what people see when they first hit that check, so if I’m a video, if I’m a channel owner, I can curate the content but also if other people can contribute that all the content will be here, this is what I want people to see at the top.
I’m going to click Save and then show you the last thing you can do at the homepage level is that you can manage permissions at the top, we manage who can edit and who can upload videos and you can also manage who can view the videos, so if you have a channel, that’s for the whole company put everyone, if you have a channel, that’s just for a smaller subset of people in your company, then you can go in, put and adjust the permissions, it’s just that group or just a set of individual people.
Once you’ve done that, you go back to the home page of that channel, you’ll see now we’ve got the curated content here at the top starting to show up and the rest of the content, that’s in this channel showing down below, this is really great, so it’s really easy to get these channels up and running personalized with the great spotlight content there at the top is there anything else.
We’ve got a lot that we’re working on beyond what I showed you. The new mobile experience we’re also working on captioning so that when you play back a video, you’ll see that transcript go by and we’re also working on just a better thumbnailing experience, it’s a static image three seconds in tomorrow, it’s going to be where you can choose your own thumbnail we’re also working on a number of different scenarios for developers where we’ll use the new video API s and publish those out and document them so that people can build their own experiences pushing and pulling the videos wherever they like them to show up.
We’re also working on hybrids so that if your on-premises customer, you would have a lot of different sites on-premises with the video portal in the cloud and be able to navigate to the two, so we have a nice hybrid story and the final one that I wanted to talk about is one that we’ve bubbled to the top based on user feedback in our user voice Channel and that’s the ability to embed videos outside the video portal, so in its site a blog and really having that embed code gives us a better experience in Yammer and a better experience in your documents and really wherever you might place that video, this is really great because of office video office 365 video shows up and in your office 365 portal, you’ll be able to just see that in your in your apple on show experience and you can start using it today.
When you go to the app launcher, you’ll see video is now a tier one tile and once it’s in your tenant it’ll just show up the tile, you just start using it and again it’s embedded in the cost of office 365 and we’re leveraging all the components across the whole suite, it’s great, so you can try that out today and give us your feedback. As you heard we’re even listening to that through user voice and all these different mechanisms of course this as well as all the other office students can be found on the office blog and follow us each Wednesday on office mechanics.
