Mrs.Rodgers, this is your plaque, recognized as Mrs. Ashley Hewitt Rodgers, Green Elementary School as 2016-17 Teacher of the Year, presented by Steven James Austin.
Shocked and very excited though, anyone going into education expects to have this honor. But I’m feeling dizzy and flustered, I’m very appreciative of this honor so I’m thankful for my school and my school, I’m happy that I get to represent them.
Nine years is unexpected, I left Millsaps College in 2008, Miss Marilyn Clark was the principal at that time, ans she interviewed me in my senior year and as soon as I graduated, I got my certificated, she hired me and I’ve been here for nine years. When I first got here, I was in third grade, then I moved up to fifth grade.
Mrs.Rodgers was honored as Teacher of the Year for Green Elementary school, today, she is recognized as the District Teacher of the Year, the selection was made based upon responses of Green Family.
Mrs.Rodgers was growing up outside of New Orleans Louisiana, after graduating from college with a double major, religious studies and elementary education, she was sure that she never wanted to live anywhere else. Then she only applied to one school, District Jackson Public school. She was offered a third-grade teaching position.
Her personal philosophy of teaching is closely tied to her sense as an educator, and she is concerned of the personal well-being of each student, she’s trying to meet each student’s needs for safety and respect, she strives to set a classroom environment that fosters creativity, independence, trust-thinking, risk-taking and meaningful expression. Students appreciate Mrs.Rodger because she’s making a meaningful impact on the students she serves, but she knows that their impact on her will also remains deeper.
One of her colleagues says that she has had the pleasure of working with Mrs.Rodgers for initially six years at Green Elementary School, she has been not only a supporter but truly cares about the children she serves. She has a unique way of establishing rapport and connection with all of her children and they absolutely adore her. There are children from previous years coming back and wanting to see her.
Every year, she spends her summers looking for new, creative and innovative things to implement in her classroom. So I’m very proud of you, and having the opportunity to work with you, to supervise you and to see you grow.
According to Mrs.Rodger’s mother, she always says she’s going to be a teacher and she says she’s meant to be a teacher.
