Description: JPS establish a Health Sciences career academy with the University of Mississippi Medical Center which allows the city’s public school teachers to flip their classrooms using technology to reach students.
Jackson seven public high schools has the city’s public school teachers flipping their classrooms using technology to reach students and working closely with the University of Mississippi Medical Center to establish a Health Sciences career academy in each school.
The health academy’s initiative is part of Academy model, JPS is putting together its fundamental curriculum change within the district. This year each high school will have the Freshman Academy for the ninth grade and three career academies on house by tenth graders and the Health Sciences will be one of them.
Health Science Academy is Academy of Sports Medicine with a group of roughly a hundred and fifty students in each academy. The students will be led by interacting with a small group of teachers. But unlike regular high school, when you flip from class to class and teach in a feature, the small core features will stay with that cadre of students throughout their high school years.
It’s critical for our two institutions to work together especially for starting health science initiative. If you are going to work in the health science initiative, you’re going to partner with one of the largest health providers in our state in order to determine what kind of curriculum, what kind of experience or students need in order to be prepared.
We use technology to allow the students to access content knowledge whenever and wherever they want to, out of class, at home, at the mall and then they come back to class they work with the teacher or groups of other students to think more deeply about those facts that they learn. I do find it helpful because it gives a bunch of new ideas.
Since most computers are more popular, it gives a nice way to learn in different ways. And it is great that the concept is not going to regurgitate, when we go into class, we can be ready to start instead of having to explain a whole bunch of stuff.
I would imagine that from the teaching aspect that the interaction with the kids is much better because you can get their interest and they are anticipated instead of me doing all the talking and they listening. And this program can be used whenever the students want to and wherever they are, which can make their time more productive.
The kids can have a conversation with each other as well as their teacher, not just listening to what the teacher say, but also providing input, taking the conversation to the next level by using some higher orders, thinking some problem solving as well. The entire work of the healthcare academies and all of the Academy is to prepare these kids for college and have them better ready for the outside. We are excited about aligning with this group to help make this process a success.
