Description: The article is about walden student portal. The author gives five success strategies for filming yourself. Those tips the author gives us in the article are all useful and we can choose to us them when we are filming ourselves.
I want to produce some different learning objectives because I want to make sure that everyone joining us today would have something to take away. The different learning objectives that I came up with are all useful and that I want to make sure everyone who joins us has an increased awareness of being on film. They can also understand basic preparation for being on film.
I have five practical tips to use during filming that they can take away from the PowerPoint that you can download in the lower left hand corner. I also want to make sure that you gain knowledge of affordable and easy to use tools for filming because that’s the most important part. If you come here and you get all the theory and everything behind it but you don’t know where to start,I think that’s the most difficult part and that’s where I want to leave everyone with when we conclude this session.
Tip number one and this is something that I think most people don’t think about. This is number one because if you are filming a video like I do from time to time you should write a script. It is an ethical statement. It does mean not you have to it. You should write a script because it is very helpful. I will explain why.
What is a script? What I’m dealing with in my context? In the way I define it is the script as a document prepared in advance containing the words an actor or actress will read on film. How do you create one? You can use a blank MS word document which is straightforward to write out what you’re going to see. You can see my little example on the right hand side.
You may not be able to read the print there but it says hello holding faculty and welcome to the academic Skills Center March 2017 faculty newsletter. There might be a few of you who are familiar with that speech because I say it every month. That is the speech that I use to open my faculty newsletters and there’s a speech that I used to close my faculty newsletters. They are very specific words that I use and I do that on purpose.
We will talk about the purpose of that later on. Microsoft word has screenplay templates. These are a little more advanced but I will give you the link at the end of the PowerPoint to get those screenplay templates. I have used them in the past for longer scripts or when I’m involving co-workers or different colleagues in the film.
What we’re talking about here is filming with a film that you want to make not being on camera for a meeting Skype or zoom but making a film such as the newsletter. If you are making a video for the scholars of change contest,a script is very important.
Why do you need a script? My number one reason for providing the script is that I want to provide a transcript for the American for Disabilities Act requirements and my audience. It also helps you focus on your topics. Often you won’t have a PowerPoint as I do to help me along. So why not use an outline?
You want to make sure that you have a transcript available and an outline makes you ad-lib a lot more. Sometimes you might talk more or you might talk a less if you have a topic outline. You might see me talking a lot because I have an outline and I’m adding. The script can also help anyone that is on camera with you. If you are interviewing different people or speaking to different people, whenever I do the podcast for the savvy student or podcast for the academic skill center,I have a script that I use of bigging.
I have questions prepared that I ask my people who participate because I want them to feel comfortable and it helps them feel comfortable. Everyone says you have the script,it’s 255 words and you have to read it exactly. What if I mess up? We ‘re going to repeat this and we’re going to talk about this throughout this entire presentation. It happens. We ‘ll talk about it. You’re human you’re going to mess up. It might take you five times to say a sentence correctly. You’re human and we’re going to talk about what it means to break the fourth wall and to speak to your audience and how that works.
Tip number two is another one that people may overlook. It is use the equipment that you have available. I will talk about this for a second. For the majority of my films that I make for either a newsletter or if I’m making the film with other people involved such as my colleague,I use my iPhone.
You don’t need any fancy DSLR or anything like that. Your iPhone or galaxy phone probably takes videos and photos way better than any giant camera. You probably only need this. It is important to understand what this is. This little black mirror here is called the front-facing. This is the portion where people taking selfies. They can see themselves so they can put themselves in the frame.
We will talk about that a lot more too. This is the rear-facing camera. You want to use that if you are filming other people,if you are filming a building,if you are filming an object or an area you want to use the rear facing. It is generally the better camera but you can’t see yourself. It is important to pay attention to where the microphone is which is on the bottom here. I use this thing.
You can use a webcam for filming and I’m using this one. I have a Logitech. I think it’s a C19. It’s very nice. It’s a great camera. It’s the difficulty with it. It’s stable so it sits here. If I want to mount it I have to put on my other monitor which faces this way which doesn’t work for me.
I have to put it here. It works well. It’s great resolution. It often contains a microphone which is very nice. If you don’t want to use your microphone on your laptop or your computer, the other thing is the last resort. One of the easiest and best resorts if you are filming or filming yourself or being in a meeting is using your laptop camera.
I don’t have mine on. The resolution is a little brighter and a little worse than my webcam so I didn’t decide not to use that. It doesn’t have the best resolution but it is a great option for joining the Skype meeting, joining zoom meeting. It’s already in your laptop and you are ready to go.
We will talk about being aware the laptop camera in a moment. Other equipment that I use for filming newsletters are available on amazon.com. It is cheap. I mean get a lavalier which is I don’t have it with me. I have there attaches to your button shirt or attaches somewhere around here. Currently I’m using this because it’s a lot better and louder. It’s great for large rooms and for hearing specific people.
It’s called the lavalier. So if you’re interviewing someone and most often I can’t do it on the new phone but most often you can attach it to the bottom of your phone and it works great. Another piece of equipment that’s very important about a duct for my tripod it is this thing. I think it was seven dollars on Amazon. It’s awesome. It’s not that tall but I stacked it on my Ottoman and it worked well. But it is fantastic.
I’m affiliated with this company but they’re great. I think it was seven bucks. Tripods selfie sticks and a flexible tripod which I will have a link for later on they all provide stability. If you’re filming like this, you’re going to shake. You’re going to shake no matter how good your phone is.
A tripod helps you with that stability. It allows you to move your hands more,it allows you to move your body more and it allows that focus stability for your camera. You’re going to get better shots and you’re going to get more interesting shots with a ten dollar tripod or a seven dollar tripod or even the selfie stick. It might looks a little weird but it works wonderfully.
Tip number three be aware of the camera eye. What is the camera eye? What do I mean by that the camera eye. This is encompassing the scene your camera is capturing. It includes you with the background. It includes the background, objects, other people, included a building nature, lighting shadows and everything.
That’s everything behind me in the camera eye. I’m doing that on purpose because I could start off like this and this would get tired. I have this purposely set in frame like this. You can look at the composition of this photo to your right,it’s an eye stock photo that we purchased for all the university to use in our powerpoints.
I like the composition to this one because that gray steel bar goes down the middle and cuts that photo in half. The woman is on the other side if she was filming a video you could move from one side and talk and then move to the other side talk. It’s a interesting way of thinking about things to think about the way this frame is set up.
I do this constantly when I film. If you are filming another person or filming yourself, being aware of the camera I and what you’re capturing is really important. so these are various thumbnails that I’ve used throughout my time filming videos and they’re very purposeful. every one of these is very purposeful.
If you start in the upper left you’ll notice that there are a lot of palm trees in that thumbnail. That’s because I was in Florida for national faculty meeting and graduation and I want to highlight that. It’s distracting to have all those stuff in the background but I want to highlight that I was in Florida and that I was there in a national faculty meeting. I thought that was important for the people watching because I was sending it out to faculty. I thought that will be important to them.
If you contrast that with the upper middle, that is me filming in my office and you can see my little camera and you can see my screen is Walden University. That is all set up on purpose. It’s a blue walden university background. That’s all done purposefully. There’s nothing on the walls. That’s all done purposefully to let nothing to distract you or nothing to make you look away from me while I’m telling you the message.
You can follow that and go to your right. It says WCSS6,200 basic APA style. That was an older one I filmed with Hillary Wentworth who was the designer. I want to focus and feature that I was having an interview with someone. I was speaking to another person. It wasn’t me. The majority of the time that I’m doing is I am focusing on Hillary and I want to advertise that to the people who were watching it.
In the lower-left that was whose letter I did with a colleague where we were playing pool. It was supposed to be cinematic fun, enjoyable. It was cool and it was a lot of fun. But it didn’t get a lot of views. It’s one of my first ones. It’s not very well but you can see how I said.
The middle bottom I am typing at a desk. What I’m going to speak about is how to enter the tutoring center at the academic skill centers. I want to feature that I was on a desk and that’s the very distracting stuff. There’s a plant, there’s a window open, there’s a desk,it is purposefully distracting.
In the lower right you can see that I’m speaking to multiple people and I want to feature those multiple people and show everyone that I’m speaking of those multiple people. Let’s talk about being on camera and different advice I have for being in the scene and in the frame. You can use the front-facing portion of your camera. In this way you can see yourself in the camera.
You can see yourself when you’re going like this and you can tell whether your head is right here in the camera or whether you are looking like this or whether you’re looking like this, you can see that because you’re looking directly at the camera.
The rear view is for if you are filming a building,an object and their human being. Perhaps you are scholar social change and you are interviewing at a hospital, you would want to use that rear facing so you can see it and it gets way better pictures. When you’re talking about yourself or maybe walking through the hospital, you would like to use this. You can use the front facing so you can see yourself a lot better.
You need to make certain that there are no distracting objects in the scene. Sometimes I have plants in the background, sometimes I have other stuff but I do it very purposefully if I have something in the background. I don’t try to mess with people. I don’t try to make it informal in that sense. I don’t usually use props.
But if you have something weird in the background, people are going to look at that and not at you and you want people looking at you while you’re filming your video, you can highlight the object of focus. Then make sure you’re the person on camera. If your object of focus is a building or it’s multiple people or it’s a group of people or it’s the other person, then make that the object of focus.
Even if it’s a panning shot of a camera with music or you are talking over it, that’s better than you sitting here going like this. If you are talking about something you can show photos to keep people’s interest for all of you staff and faculty on here. When you start a meeting on skype resume, make sure that you consider what you look like on camera before you jump into that meeting. I did not mean to exclude students when you were in a meeting.
They’re the same thing because you may not want to be on camera doesn’t mean your camera isn’t on. What I mean is that zooms is a group meeting area. The default setting for zoom is that your camera is on. Most people don’t change that so you will be on camera whether you want to or not.
Your laptop camera is your default and most people’s laptop is pointed or is pointed upward in an angle resulting in what I call Blair which view. It is this if you’ve been in a meeting before you’ve probably seen people with this view on their laptop maybe they don’t know they’re on camera or not. But that’s usually what they look like. Make sure you can test that and let me show you how to test that.
You can go to places called webcam test.com or test my cam net which is probably the safer one. You can look at your webcam before you go anywhere. I don’t do that one very often but I will do it today. You can test what a webcam looks like. Next you can check your microphone volume. I’m not going to go through this too much but the instructions drawn here for how to check your microphone volume.
You can listen to the device. There’s a little maybe you can’t see in the photo but there’s a little option you can deactivate your microphone, you can activate it,you can adjust your back row noise. When you built the levels, you’ll adjust your background noise. I always make these things in a habit before I go to any meeting.
I checked my microphone levels every time I go to a meeting. It takes me two minutes and I do it every time before a meeting. Once you do it in the morning and you don’t unplug your microphone, the settings will stay the same. These instructions are here and they’re useful.
Tip number four is move around. What do I mean by move around? What makes your video interesting? Is it you? Is it your subject? Is your subject moving? Movement creates stimulation and it forces your viewer to pay attention. I’m sitting in one spot. I’m doing that on purpose. I’m sitting down. I use something called a jump cut.
When action during one scene is interrupted or stopped abruptly in action in another scene takes place and I made that up. It can be as simple as me telling you something here and then stopping the recording or editing the recording and having me be like this. What happens is naturally people watching you want to follow you,so they are forced to move their eyes.
What happens then is that you get them more engaged. I’m telling you secrets here. They are big secrets. It’s as simple as changing positions from stage right to stage last at the end of a sentence or at the end of a paragraph. You need to keep viewers interest. It’s a little more informal. It’s called a jump cut. It’s a great way to keep people’s attention and make things interesting.
The other thing is fake it until you make it. What I mean by that is everyone’s nervous. Everybody’s nervous in front of a camera. What I recommend is pick a motion that you like. The last thing I do is I go like this every time. It’s a motion I like to do and it works well.
The other thing I do is I clap my hands which is not such a good thing because the microphone level will go through the roof by me doing that. That’s up to you. You can do whatever you feel comfortable when you are doing it and whatever gets you in the mood to film. You may not be comfortable but faking it is better than letting the viewers know that you’re uncomfortable.
Faking it is selecting a pre-sub prescribed set of emotions movements. They are angles ideas or introductions to help you prepare. I had very specific introduction and outro from my newsletters. I do that on purpose to get myself comfortable for filming. I read directly from the script. I didn’t talk about that. I memorize it.
I memorize a sentence and I speak it and then I memorize another sentence and I speak and I memorize another sentence and I speak. I mess up a lot but I always edit. I do not read. I don’t hold the script like this and read. That is an excellent question because that’s a very difficult thing to have to do which requires a lot of practice. Somebody asked about editing your film and let’s talk about that and we will also talk about using the script and different things. How that works by editing your film? What most people don’t know is that the majority of what I do is editing. Filming takes me a little bit of time.
I mess up all the times. For example where I’m supposed to read welcome to the academic skill center faculty newsletter of March 2018 and I say 2017. If I mess that up it’s still recorded. So I can stop it and I look down and I reset. I will make sure to pay attention to the camera. Editing often takes me a lot of time.
What if you can’t afford editing software? That’s coming up later. But in editing you can add music, photos, thumbnails and you can sometimes add links previews for other sections and section breaks. A two-minute video can take 10 to 20 minutes for me to film but it could take one to two hours to edit depending on how fancy I want the to appear, whether I want to cut stuff, whether I want to add photos, whether I want to add text and all those different things.
The phrase will clean it up in post-production originates from the idea that you have a lot of messy stuff. If you take two hours of filming and you can put it into editing and you can cut it down to ten minutes. When you mess up and you will mess up. When you are on camera, you can pause and reset and think to yourself do you need to start over at the last sentence or the entire paragraph.
If you are reading one sentence and you messed that sentence up,it might be easy enough for you to say that sentence again and pause and reset and give yourself editing time. If you pause slightly before reading or messing up,it’s easier for you to edit later on.
If you have a big chunk and you continually speak,it is very difficult to edit all that out. If you take a pause even if it’s for five seconds, then you have the ability to slice that piece. It’s very odd but I do it from time to time. If I am doing something and speaking and I mess up and I forget my line,I will sit like this in the same position. I will left and I look down. There’s nobody telling me my line.
So I look back down and I look up to make sure that I’m in the same position. It’s very difficult. But it’s a lot more difficult to edit. It looks a lot more informal. Don’t be afraid of messing up. You can say something three to four to ten times if necessary but get it right.
Messing up could be a way of showing your audience that you’re human. Breaking the fourth wall is speaking to your audience and letting them know that you are filming. I would say only do this in a very informal way and you’re acknowledging your mistakes. You need to make sure the audience you’re talking to is somebody who’s going to be acceptable for that. If you’re doing a scholars of change I would not recommend it because it’s going to be more formal. You should be careful when you are adding music.
You don’t want to overwhelm your viewer. You should keep water, your script and paper towel near you because you might sweat a little. It happens when you’re nervous. You need to make sure you get every shot because you can’t control nature.
Let’s talk about the different resources. Let me answer a few questions here. Do you load music during editing? I do and I play it during the background in the background. I make it soft in the background and you have to be very careful with music because using other people’s music is illegal. So I make my own.
You can find music out there. You can google it and find a copyright free version. Here are some editing software that I would recommend. If you have a Mac,you can use iMovie. If you have a PC or laptop, you can use Windows Movie Maker. This is what editing looks like. It’s laborious and it is a lot of cutting and moving things. You can pay for things such as Adobe Premiere Pro,Final Cut Pro or VideoStudio Pro for Windows.
I use Final Cut Pro because I like my Mac and it works well. There are different apps that I use. I use movie Pro on my iPhone. There’s other one that is film Agora. I’ve never used those. You can use those for editing as well. I have a 60-inch tripod. These are all Amazon links, lavalier lapel microphone. I have the selfie stick link and the link to the screenplay templates as well. I watched a lot of videos. I watched a lot of videos about how people are doing stuff. It was cool. and everybody does stuff differently. It’s very interesting to watch.
That is all I have for today. I want to give a few questions. I’m sorry we’re going a little bit late but I want to get a few questions in here. Shana writes how to balance presenting the important contact with keeping these humors bits? I would say it depends on your audience. For my newsletter,I can be a little more informal.
But I know that because that I’ve done 20 of these things. It depends on what level of formality you want. If you have time you can see the part that I interviewed CEO Dr. Eric Riedel and I promise you there is no humor in that. You can watch it on the dock writing assessment. There’s no humor in that. There’s no informality in that. I’m going to stay on a little bit and answer some few questions.
But if you want to take off and leave, that’s fine. I’m going to keep going and answer a few questions if anybody has some in the chat pod. Sony asks how to insert a film like this into PowerPoint slides. That’s a good question because it depends on the size of it. When you’re creating the PowerPoint you can push insert and you can pick the file.
The difficulty is with putting it in PowerPoint or when you’re making a PowerPoint presentation, the video doesn’t load as well. So what happens is your PowerPoint deck gets big in size and it doesn’t load very quickly and you push play and it spins and nothing happens. There’s so much data in that. If you are on a reliable network with people that are also on a reliable connection,I think that works very well.
But it presents a lot of difficulties when uploading it into a PowerPoint. I want to emphasize the reading of scripts. I have a script sitting down here. This is for a longer one that I didn’t finish. It says Walton students and welcome to the Center for academic excellence the second Facebook live event. Now that is terrible when I am reading that. Even if I put it here, you can see I’m looking over there.
I can hold it up or lay it down. It’s tough. Sometimes I use my computer monitor. I should have left a little buffer at the beginning of the end because I looked up. That was what I was supposed to say. But it’s not what I’m supposed to say. You can see how difficult this is. It is difficult and it can take a long time to film this because I didn’t read this correctly. So I’d have to do it again.
When you have a big script like this,it takes a long time to do that. Then you will have a lot of footage that you have to cut. I think what’s important when you’re filming is that you make eye contact with the camera and making sure that your viewers know that you’re talking to them.
The eye contact is important and people will follow you with their eyes when you go from side to side. That’s naturally what we want to do. Do you have some tips on doing Facebook live videos? The only Facebook live video I’ve done have been pre-recorded and edited. If you’re going to do a Facebook live video, you need to be prepared to mess up. If you’re filming it live, you need to be confident in what you’re saying.
For this I didn’t even need the power of one because I can talk about this for a half an hour or 40 minutes. This is a subject that I’m aware of. I have no problem to discuss now. If you’re doing it live,I would recommend it. If it’s your first or second time starting with a subject of which you were very familiar with, you need to do some research before you start. If you are unfamiliar with things, you can keep eyes on the information.
Every month I do updates because it changes every month,I have to have a script or I’ll forget it. I’ll forget what I want to say because it’s not something I’m familiar with month or month. So I would recommend that if you’re ever doing it first you must make sure that it’s something that you’re comfortable with before doing it. If it’s something you’re not very familiar with, there might be a lot of ohms in breaks in between,so make sure you are familiar with it.
