Description: The article is mainly talking about the point of www readworks org student. The content is the statement from a teacher telling her students some necessary things about read works org which is a site that can offer a lot of different tabs and things to students.
Taking a look at some of our PSSA practice for reading, I have a great website for you and girls to work on for some practice in different areas of reading the website, as you see, it is read works org and this site has a lot to offer a lot of different tabs and things on here.
If you go up to the top, you got lessons and units, there is a bunch of different things, you can do reading passages and then some information about the website that can be very valuable, but for you students, if you click on skill and strategy units, it’s great.
Because you can go over author’s purpose cause-and-effect setting sequencing and predicting all the different areas of and focus areas that we’ve been working on this year, comprehension units are great different things you can do there.
The unit is wonderful, if you’re working on a particular novel, there are some different practice units there, but what you’re going to be working on this evening is taking a look at this tab here reading passages.
If you click on that, it pulls this information up and it looks like it, but I’m going to keep it very simple for you, I’m going to go across the top here and show you what I would like you to do.
What I would like you to do is to click on grade 8, this Lexile level and this is a level of reading, but you don’t need to worry about that domain, you got different categories or classes ranging from arts, culture and religion to fitness and health and science sports.
We’re going to keep that at the way, it is text type, we’ll keep that the way it is, so I don’t want you to touch anything here except for grade 8 and then I want you to click on apply and what you’ll get is a list of 8 grade reading passages.
If you scroll down here, you can see grade 8, here’s the Lexile level which is the level of reading, so it’s not that important, the domain is showing you could be science category, it could be earth and space and science social studies or geography fitness and health.
So you got an array of types of stories informational literary and the skill and strategy involved and for most of these, it says it’s multi skill strategy, so you’re going to be taking a look at a lot of different skills.
Why are we doing this? Because it’s wonderful practice for taking the PS essays, so that’s to show you I’m going to scroll down here somewhere and this is an article, it’s called books through bars informational read this article.
So now you will have to create a login which is very simple, but since I have already logged in and have a password, you’ll click on the title to see how it gives you the grade level, the Lexile level, the text type of skill strategy, all you need to do is to click on this.
It’s going to open up the article, take a little bit of time here which is good, so what you have is that you have pictures, it should be coming up, but it’s seems to be working a few slow books through bars which is the article with title.
That’s a picture of a prison or jail, this article is talking about how prisoners write to book companies requesting and asking for books to be sent, so they can read and the article can strike up a great debate on whether you believe that prisoners should have access to asking for books that they can read while in prison.
This is an excellent article, so it gives you the article a few pages long, very informational there interesting articles in this website and then if you get down to about the fourth or fifth page, there’s a bunch of different questions, it’s a multiple choice, there’s some vocab involved, what’s the main idea of the passage?
Here’s some more with vocab and then there are some short answers as well which is basically what we are looking for for practicing with and for the PSSA and the Keystone’s and it gives you the teachers’ guide and answers.
So we’re going to ignore that part and I would like you since I have shown it and it does come up, I would like you to use your integrity and your honesty and to read the article in tamps of the questions tonight for homework without looking up the answers.
We will go over them tomorrow, so hopefully this was a good review for you, if you do have any questions or you are having a hard time finding a particular article, make sure that you write down or jot down those questions that you can ask tomorrow as I could go around and check.
But your homework tonight is to simply find one article, read it and answer all the questions and tomorrow we will be sure if we have enough time to go through everything, good luck, hope you find an interesting article and we will see you tomorrow in class.
