Max deadline is creeping up on us and millions of Americans still haven’t filed their tax returns yet. Here to help with your last-minute filing tips. This is Fred Sokolowski from H&R block. Thanks for making time for us during your busy season. What should procrastinators do? Where should they start?
They should start by asking themselves why are you waiting. If the due date is April 17th this year and sometimes people like to wait until the very last minute. They’re often thinks the things that we can still do. You can still do this until April 17th to minimize your taxes. For instance adding more money to your health savings account or an IRA or looking at the big picture. Oftentimes people wait because they think they might owe money.
It’s never a good idea to wait. If you owe money hopefully there’s something we can do to minimize that. You can still file your return by filing your return. If you don’t file a return you owe money your penalties can be up to 25%. So get it done. Often we have people come in and they think that they owe a lot of money and they don’t or they’re getting money back from the state and they can help pay the Fed. But you need to look at the big picture and try to get that taken care of. That makes sense. What should you bring to your appointment?
What you want to bring to your appointment is your source documents. You want to bring your w-2s any brokerage statements if you take money from a pension. One of the things that we’re seeing people miss is they’ve used their health savings account they’re not bringing their 1099SI. You need that.
We’re starting to see some letters now for people who did their own taxes in 2016 and forgot to put that in there. They said that I have regular medical expenses and now they get this letter, saying you owe money. They need help unwinding that. You need to bring anything that you have related to that.
Would you say the biggest filing mistake you’re seeing this year. I think the biggest filing mistake that we’re saying is people aren’t sure what they’re filing status is. Some people think that they’re married but they can file single and it’ll be fine. That’s not good. Sometimes we see people who are single and they don’t go head of household. Another mistake that we commonly see young people especially people in college.
They’re claiming their own exemption and they can’t do that or it’s not working out for them and they’re cheating their parents. The parent who says my child already claimed themselves so I’m not going to claim them. We see a lot of money getting left on the table with this.
It’s something that you need to look at. If somebody has done any of these things are wrong and maybe they need a second opinion ,we can look at it. We can help you amend it H&R block off or something called the free second look with that. If you’ve done your taxes whether it’s TurboTax or a competitor,we’re happy to look at it if we agree with what you did. We’ll give you our guarantee.
