I’m going to show a little bit about how I use IXL for math. They also have language arts but primarily I use them for the math practice. When students log into IXL,this is what they are typically going to see. We have all the different standards for math,you can either navigate looking here or you can look at the side,let’s take third grade as an example and see what this looks like.
When we click on the third grade,it takes you to the page that has all the third grade,it lists down all the different parts of that,each time I hover my mouse over a section,it gives a sample problem,I can see what that’s going to look like.
When students go through and start clicking on these things,it starts giving them practice problems,the great thing about doing this on the computer is that as they work,if they start getting more and more questions right,they’ll get more difficult questions and eventually they’ll be able to master this skill. If we got it wrong,it doesn’t say sorry incorrect try again,we can scroll down and you can see the explanation,it shows you what you answered.
If it goes down,it explains how they got it wrong,so they’ll know how to do the next one. Now we’ve got it and we can move to the next one,it’s now given me an easier problem because I’ve gotten one wrong. I could see these are tens,these are my ones and now I’m ready to keep going,eventually if I get enough right,I’ll master the skill and be able to move on.
Students can also earn awards which are cool,they can get awards that they can then print out for mastering skills,they can spend time practicing or answer a number of problems,those are always fun to bring in and post up in the classroom. There are lots of ways you can use this program,you can throw it out there for extra practice,but I use it for my math homework.
On my website on my homework page ,you can see the reading homework I put out on the website,I can make it easier to log in,I have set up passwords and usernames for all my students,it is easy,all you have to do to set up your roster is to simply go to roster,I’ll show you how to do that in a few quick and easy steps.
I will tell you how to go ahead and fill in your students,it took me about five minutes to set up my roster for my class. One of the great things about this is that I don’t have to spend any time grading homework,it is always awesome. I get quick feedback about how my students are doing by going to reports. When I go to reports,there are great and useful reports on here. When I first go to the page,it shows me the class overview,I can see the usage this week,I can see the performance,this is one of my favorite.
I can see trouble spots,if I see what’s going on and see what’s going on with my trouble spots,I can look closer at that,I can look down,I’ve got three students needing improvement. If I hover this mouse over that three,it will show me the names of those students,the same thing goes with each individual,this lets you quickly see where your students are at.
There are lots of other great reports,one of the ways I use to track student progress is that I sign them not a number of problems but an amount of time. I can let them to do fifteen minutes of my Excel practice each night in whatever skill we’ve been studying that week,if we’re going in class,I’ll set fifteen minutes each night within the multiplication skills.
I can let them do three digit subtraction,I can set fifteen minutes a night this week working in the subtraction area that we are also working on in class,that will let my high students work through much more difficult problems. My students who are struggling might take fifteen minutes to get three problems done,but I’ll at least be able to see where they are at in their skills and then I can address the problem areas in class when they come to class.
By doing so,my high students aren’t stuck doing problems that are too boring for them and my low students aren’t stuck doing problems that are too hard for them,the computer program will level that out and at the same time let me know where everyone is.
The last thing is that it will email you a class report every week with a breakdown of each student about how much time they’ve spent on IXL that week,it also includes other pertinent information that you want to include in that report.
