The first test prep material that I have used was Kaplan. I don’t think it is the greatest. It’s not worth for $1, 300. I took the online version because I was misinformed by the Kaplan representative and had no choice. That’s why I took the online course.
Originally I wanted to take the in-person course where you have to go into the classroom, there is an actual instructor, there are other students and you can learn and study together, it was only $100 more. I may have had a better experience with Kaplan if I had the choice.
The online one is a self-motivated study, it wasn’t too great for me, I am going to show you the reasons. The first reason why Kaplan was not great for me is thatif you don’t have a solid foundation in your sciences, Kaplan won’t be very beneficial for you.
At that point, when I took the course, it had been three or four years since I taken general chemistry. For that section I didn’t remember anything from gen chem. Kaplan is more of a review material, they rarely give you all the knowledge in the foundation, but you should know that when you go into the prep course.
It was a little bit difficult for me to study. I had to refer back to my old textbooks. I use Khan Academy a lot because the videos on Kaplan aren’t too great. If I have to use other resources and I’m paying $1, 300, I don’t think that’s great for me.
Another reason why I didn’t like Kaplan is that they don’t have great customer support. Whenever I had a question, I have to email through a special email address and tell them the question, I need to put a screenshot of the question and the answer.
It may take them at least like four business days before they send the email back to me. Most of the time, it may take an entire week before I get any response back. That was frustrating for me because I was studying something specific, I want to know the answer but I have to wait for a long time.
A week later I may forget about the question or I have found the answer to the question or I don’t care anymore. Perhaps having an actual instructor can be different, I can ask them as soon as I have the questions. This review should be more geared specifically for the online Kaplan course.
The third reason why I’m not too fond of Kaplan is that I didn’t feel like I learned very well on their online interface. There are different modules, you can go through this lesson, you can read books that come with the course, you can go through each module in it, it jumps around from different sections of the DAT exam.
One day it’ll be chemistry, the next day it’s organic chemistry, it changes. You will eventually get through the entire course. Kaplan has very specific strategies that they teach and encourage their users to utilize. I found it a little tedious because the activities and the modules they require you to go through are not great.
Their strategies are not very effective and not very applicable to a certain question. Having to use that can be annoying. It didn’t give you the freedom and the flexibility to try out different things. It’s a very set course for students. If I had to put it on a scale from 1 point through 10 point and 10 point was awesome, I would give Kaplan 5 point.
