Today we are going to be talking about the website which is LastPass com, Greg chooses to show it to me because he knows that my affinity for tiny food from Spain, let’s back up a minute, we’re going to be talking about the website LastPass, what is LastPass? LastPass is a password manager website.
What is a password manager website? A password manager is a website or an application that helps keep track of all of your passwords and keeps them safe, today we’ll be talking about how great it is, I can remember passwords by myself, a password manager is for everyone, so David how many different websites do you have to sign in using a username and password? 302.
How many different passwords do you have with that different passwords? If somebody has one password, they can get into all of the sites, all 302 of them, the goal of the password manager is to make sure that you can create strong and unique passwords across every website, David do you think that you can do that without writing them down on post-it notes?
So that’s what a password manager does, it stores all of your passwords in one secure spot across multiple devices so that you don’t need to remember 302 passwords, you have to remember one and then the password manager has the other, I’ve got it, so it seems to be a digital safe or vault and your passwords is the combination to the vault.
Once you’re inside, you can get to all of your passwords but no one else can get in and get them exactly, but the cool thing about a password manager is that when it’s in the vault, they encrypt all that data, so if somebody hacks into your safe, they won’t be able to use your passwords, so today we’re going to focus on LastPass which is one of many password managers out there.
It’s one that I use, so I’m familiar with it, that’s why we’re going to focus on that one, there is a little legal statement before we continue, the Utah State Board of Education does not endorse LastPass, as we are only using it here as an example, different password managers may function differently.
If you are using another password manager, their websites should have resources that will walk you through installation and proper usage, we’re going to be using Google Chrome as our web browser not Internet Explorer or edge or Mozilla Firefox, so downloading this extension is going to act a little differently if you’re using one of those other browsers.
Gregg, you never let us use Netscape Navigator, he doesn’t like it, our first step is that we have to go to the Chrome Web Store, this isn’t the visit on your computer, let’s get started by going to the Chrome Web Store, now at USB II, this page will show up, click continue, you’re going to search for LastPass, click on that and you’ll see that under extensions where it says LastPass, it’s located at the top on my screen.
On the right side, you’re going to see a button that says add to Chrome, click on add to Chrome, when you click on add to Chrome, a little pop-up window is going to appear, it says that add LastPass for your password manager, when this window pops up, click add extension, this is going to allow you to use LastPass on every site with a username and password when you’re using Google Chrome.
Now a new tab is going to appear where it’s going to direct you, click on a button near the top of your browser, the little square box with three little dots is the LastPass extension button, click on this LastPass button to create your account, once you click on that, you’ll be asked to enter an email address that you’re going to use.
We suggest that you use a personal email address that you’re going to use often and not your work email address, below you’ll see a little check box that you can click on, clicking that box is to sign a contract, I will make sure that you read through the terms and the privacy policy to make sure that you’re fine with it.
You click the box and then click on create an account, the next screen that pops up will ask you to create a master password, a master password is important, because this is the password that is going to help you get on to every website that uses LastPass, so this step is very important, because your master password is the one password that’s going to give you access to all your other passwords.
It seems that one password is to rule them all, what you need to do now is to think of a secure long password that you will remember, you want to make this long, in fact you want to make it a phrase where you’re putting in spaces, changing some of the letters to capitals and changing some of the letters to numbers or special characters as well.
So if I decide to use a phrase such as I love my mother, I can change all the letters and add spaces, since everyone is reading this article, now I wouldn’t suggest using that, so the other thing that I’d suggest is to make it secure and strong but also make it easy enough to remember, so you don’t have to write it down.
I have got one, I’m a little bit of a colleague loss, so how about the phrase jindagi which is all in Chinese characters, maybe I should stick to English, what I am thinking about is something such as lyrics to a song, I was born in West Philadelphia and raised on the playground where I’ve spent most of my days.
Make sure that when you type in your password, it’s as strong as possible, the bar below it should be green and all the way to the right side, if it’s yellow or the bar only reaches halfway or less, you may need to think of a different password, remember that the longer the password is, the better it will be.
Once you’ve decided on a password, go ahead and type it in new master password, type it again and confirm master password, make sure that it’s something that you will remember, it’s something that you don’t have to write down, I don’t suggest using the password hint, but if you’d like to, you can put that in.
Now once you have finished filling out all those, click next and it seems that it is very easy and painless, thanks so much, that’s great, in fact, we haven’t done, you have signed up for an account but we still need to put the passwords in there, the first time for you to log into LastPass, it will show you some websites that you can get started with.
You don’t have to start with any of these suggested sites, but we’re going to use the Amazon link to show you how to do it, it will show two steps, the first step is to fill in your username and password, once you click on sign in or log in, you’ll see a little window pop up in the upper right-hand corner of your screen.
The second step asks you to click the button that says add which will add the username and password to your password manager, now it’s stored safely in your password vault, we’re going to click on autofill to see how this work, once we click on the button, it’s going to log us out of Amazon.
Once you click on the LastPass icon, you’ll notice that a little window pops up with information from LastPass, if you click on that, it will automatically fill in all of the fields for you, and what I love about this Gregg is that it seems to be as easy as when I am having my browser, but for me that’s a problem, because you’re using LastPass which doesn’t mean that it’s safe.
It’s only safe when you’re using your master password to log in, so we haven’t done yet, we need to go and make sure that every website that we log into makes us use our master password before it automatically populates those fields for us, you need to open your LastPass account, you can click on those three dots in the upper right hand corner of your screen.
Then you’re going to click open fault in order to make your account more secure, we’re going to click on the button on the bottom left-hand corner of the page where it says account settings, once you get to this screen, make sure that you click on advanced settings, we’re going to scroll down a little bit and make sure that we click on the log in to a site option, this is going to make it.
So every time you log into a website, all you have to do is to use your master password and it will automatically fill in the username and password fields, click update and start using your master password, we’re going to go back and refresh the page on Amazon and try logging in this time using our master password.
You’ll see that when I click on the Lastpass icon, it’s going to ask me to enter my master password, once I enter that in, it’s going to automatically fill in the username and password fields, this allows me to log into any website that I’ve put in my Lastpass vault using my master password, so all I need to know now is that whenever I go to a new website, a little thing will appear in the top corner.
I click Add on that and it’ll automatically add that password to my vault, but you can also add them through the LastPass website, if you go back to your LastPass vault, you can add them manually, click the plus sign in the bottom right hand corner and you can add the website username and password straight from the LastPass website, you can open up websites straight from your vault as well.
Hover over the account that you want to open, click on the launch button, type in your master password and you’ll automatically be redirected to the site that you want to view, so are there any other features that LastPass has that people should know about that are beneficial? There are a few, it will automatically exist passwords by letting you know how strong your passwords are indicated by the color bar below.
You can use LastPass to auto change some passwords, so you don’t have to create them anymore, LastPass will create it and remember it which makes it even stronger, I would also suggest doing the security challenge which tells you how strong all of your passwords are, including your master password and it will ask if you want to change all of the weak or duplicated passwords.
You can add information such as your shipping address, billing address and credit card information as well, you can also add another layer of security by adding two-factor authentication to all your accounts through the password manager, password managers do a few other things but those are the basics, thank you for now, I know about password manager and knowing is half of the battle.
