Description: This passage mainly focuses on marriott rewards login. Marriott and SPG are introducing two new credit cards, the Marriott Rewards Premier Plus Card and the SPG American Express Luxury Card. The author talks about these two cards from the announcements.
This is Credit Shifu here, a lot of you have watched the announcement from Marriott and SPG about the future of their loyalty programs, today we’re going to fill you in on the two new credit cards that are being released, but first of all we’ll talk about a few things from the announcements.
A lot of that stuff has come true, they are merging on August 1st both the website and also the points currency, they’re not going to have 3 points currencies anymore, they’re going into a single points currency based off of Marriott points.
If you have an SPG account, the points in your account will be transferred over to Marriott at a 1 to 3 ratio, so if you have an SPG account, the points in your account are going to be transferred into the new points currency at a 1 to 3 ratio, you get three of the new points for every one SPG point that you have at the moment.
If you have a certain number of nights with each chain that are counting towards elite status, you’re going to be able to combine those nights in your accounts, so you might get two elite status, but there are two new credit cards coming out.
We’re going to give a little bit of rundown of these two credit cards, first up we have a new Marriott card from Chase, it is called the Marriott Rewards premier plus, it has a $95 annual fee, it’s only $10 more than the current Marriott Rewards card from Chase.
You get a free anniversary night on this card worth up to 35,000 points, you can compare that with the the older Marriott card which still exists, the anniversary night on that is a stay valued up to 25,000 points, you can stay in a better hotel.
You’re going to get silver elite status and gold status after spending thirty five thousand dollars in any one year, you also get 15 free elite credits, elite nights that count towards the next level of status which would be gold, they’re going to start doing that in 2019.
The card also has no foreign transaction fees, we’ll have a look at what points it earns, it owns six points per dollar at Marriott and SPG properties and two points per dollar everywhere else, that’s a little bit different to the old one, the old one was one point per dollar on everything, then you had some two point four dollar categories, I believe it was restaurants car rental and air ticket.
My verdict on the new card is absolutely to get it, for only $10 more you get a more valuable free night, in addition to that you’ve got more paths to gold status after spending $35,000 if you use the card a lot or you’ve got those 15 three nights, that’s all for $10 a year and you’ve got increased point earning as well, that one definitely gets a thumbs up from me.
We’re now going to go over to have a look at the new SPG card which is called the SPG American Express luxury card, why do they call it luxury card? It makes me think of the MasterCard, black card and titanium card, this is a four hundred and fifty dollar year annual fee card, it’s like a Tier four credit card.
This is a Tier four credit card, it has an anniversary free night valued up to fifty thousand points, it’s got the best anniversary free night out of the two new cards, you get gold status with this card and you get platinum status after seventy five thousand dollars worth of spending in a year if you do that much spending on the card, there’s a three hundred dollars statement for Marriott and SPG eligible purchases.
In the terms and conditions it’s unclear whether that includes stays or whether it’s incidental purchases, if you make purchases such as restaurants in their resorts, you have to charge it to your room first and then pay it with this card when you pay your bill, but it doesn’t mention stays, that’s something I have to clarify with them.
You get 15 nights towards your next level of membership, you get priority past select, that’s unlimited with two guests, it’s the same priority pass select that you get with the Amex Platinum, it is not as good as the one that comes with a sapphire Reserve that is unlimited with unlimited guests, but you would expect that from a Tier four card with a four hundred and fifty dollars annual fee.
In addition to that you also get a Global Entry credit that’s standard from a Tier four card as well, on top of that there are no foreign transaction fees, I think for this one you’d have to weigh up whether it’s worthwhile to upgrade to this card.
The Marriott one is a no-brainer, ten dollars extra, so many more benefits, go for it, I would upgrade for it, but for this one for me I wouldn’t get it, because so many of the benefits of it already double up with benefits I have from the Sapphire Reserve, I already get priority pass select from them, I’ve got unlimited guests, I also got my Global Entry credit from sapphire reserve.
I had my interview the other day, I’ve already got my card, I’ll show it to you in another article, for me I’m going to say that it’s not necessarily worth upgrading if you already have another premium Tier four card, if you don’t yet have a Tier four credit card $450 annual fee credit card, you could consider this one, it is definitely a good choice.
I want to make one note as well that the original SPG card with the $95 a year is having a little bit of a devaluation in its point earning, it’s going to be earning two of the new points currency per dollar, that’s based off of the Marriott points currency.
Each point is only worth one third of a star point, so with that new card you’re only going to be getting 66 cent of the value that you’re getting from your point earning before when you were earning star points, it’s a little bit of a devaluation, some people are probably going to be unhappy about that, but it’s not black and white because they have changed the award chart a bit and they’ve introduced off-peak rates so that you’re going to be getting rooms for cheaper rates.
It’s devaluing but on the other hand it’s going to require further analysis to understand whether it is that bad or not, on the surface it looks like a little bit of a devaluation to the point on that card, thank you so much for reading, let me know your thoughts on these two new cards.
I probably will be applying for the Marriott one, I’ve been trying to get the Marriott card for ages, this summer I should be out of that, I should be able to apply for the new card, leave your comments below.
