Description: This passage is mainly about naviance login. In this passage, the writer tells us how to use Naviance for college applications and how to log in the Naviance account step by step.
This is Mrs. Gibbons and I want to walk you through the process of logging on to your Naviance account and getting ready to connect your college applications, so the counselors and registrar and student services can access your applications and begin submitting your stuff for college admissions.
So the first place that you need to start is to go to the Louis Palmer High School web page and go to the Naviance tab at the top, you’ll come to the Naviance login page and I hope that you know your login, if you do not, please come down to student services and see me or any of the counselors to get your login information.
You’re going to need this login information throughout your entire senior year as you start applying to colleges, so mine is already put in here, so I’m going to go ahead and login, you’re going to come to the Welcome page on Naviance and family connection, you’ll know that you’re in the right place, because at the top it’s going to say Louis Palmer high school and it should have your name.
So I have logged in as myself as a student, so the biggest thing that we’re going to talk about today is how you are going to connect your college applications to e-docs, I know you’ve seen lots of emails for me and lots of text blasts are coming out about using this, and I think there’s some confusion about exactly how all this works.
So I’m going to walk you through step by step and explain it all so that you’re comfortable with using this process and in submitting your college applications, so when you have logged in, you’re going to go to the college’s tab and that’s going to bring you to this page, here is the place that you need to pay the most attention to, this is my colleges box here, one of the important things about this is that the upcoming college visits are listed here.
So if you’re interested in coming to meet with some of the representatives, this is where you’ll be able to sign up for the college representative visits, when you sign up for those, you will get a registration confirmation and that is what you’ll use to come down to student services to visit with those representatives.
That registration confirmation will be your pass out of class, so make sure that you print that up and your teachers are aware of that, the next thing that I want you to look at is this little tab here called colleges that I’m applying to, this is where most of the work in Naviance is going to be done as far as the college application process goes.
So click on colleges that I’m applying to and you’re going to be brought to this page, here you can see that I’ve already added a few different colleges in here so you can see what this looks like, if you have not added any colleges yet, you’re going to go to this button and click add to this list, and then you’re going to put the type of application that you’re submitting, either Regular Decision rolling early decision early action or others.
So I would submit early Regular Decision or early action, you’re going to want to select Regular Decision or early action most often, so early action is the one that has an earlier deadline and then you’ll find out the admission status sooner typically before Christmas break, in a lot of situations remember that early decision is binding, so you don’t want to select early decision unless you are 100% sure that it is your top choice College and that you are planning on going there.
Because if you select early decision in your application, you are bound to go to school there, so please make sure that you select one of those and then you are going to look up the colleges that you are planning on attending, so I’m going to go and I’ve already added a bunch of colleges, but I’m going to go ahead and select Adam state.
Then a very important step is that you need to make sure what you follow here is that if you have submitted your application, you need to check this box by submitting application, which means that you have done whatever process that College has set that they want you to do for their application process.
So if you have not done that, do not click this box yet, because that’s very important, as we start going into the transcript requests whether or not you have submitted your application packet to the college, if you have then go ahead and request the transcript as well, so I’m going to say that I’ve already submitted my application to Adam State and I’m ready to request my transcript, and that’s the only college that I’m going to add now.
Then you’re going to scroll down and add college, then you’re going to get this question about whether or not you’re applying via the common app, I recommend applying via a common table if it is available, because it is much easier for us to submit things, it’s one way through the common table and then you only have to pay one transcript fee.
So the common app is a place where you can add all the colleges that you’re going to be applying to, and then we will also be able to submit everything in that way and that one transcript fee, if you do them all separately, then it’s five dollars per transcript whereas it’s only one five dollar common app fee.
So I’m going to update my applications because I’m going to go ahead and use the common top, so it brings you back to your colleges that you’re applying to list, and you will see the method of application submission here, so the ones are common app schools, you’ll see this little computer icon with CA in the middle of it, and it means that these are going to go via common app.
So I’m going to look at this and I’m going to say OK, I need five dollars for my common app schools and then I need another five for this one and another for this one, so I need $15, one thing that’s very important as you’re doing this is that colleges do not like to receive transcripts for school profiles from your high school before you have completed your application.
So that’s where that step that I am talking about, that’s the place that you check the box of submitting your application or not, if you haven’t submitted it, don’t check that box and we won’t send them anything off until you’re ready to do that, so it’s important that you’re keeping communication with Mrs. Shaaka so that we can get things all coordinated and submitted.
So you’ll see your list of colleges here that you’re applying to and Regular Decision early decision or whatever you are choosing to do, and then over here if you’ve submitted your application, you’ll see that here whether or not you’ve requested your transcripts, so this is exactly what I will see on my side as well.
So I see that you are ready to request transcripts for Adams state and for School of Mines and for Vanderbilt, so those are the three that I’m going to concentrate on now because you’ve already submitted your application and you have requested your transcripts there, then once you do that, the other thing that you need to pay attention to is your teacher recommendation section here.
So this is where you will add a request for a teacher recommendation, you click on that and then you’re going to click on this drop down menu and a list of all of the teachers, it is in this little box that pops up, so you’re going to pick the teacher that you are going to request a recommendation from, and then you can write them a nice little note.
I’m going to go ahead and request from Mrs. Brandel and then you can type a little note and whatever you want to say, thank you so much for typing a letter of recommendation, it is also important that you meet with this teacher in person even though you’re requesting this on Naviance, this is giving them access to be able to upload a letter of recommendation to your Naviance portal.
So I’m going to request from Mrs. Brandel and then you’re going to update request, so my request for teacher recommendation has been sent to Miss Brandel, and you can see down here under teacher recommendations that Mrs. Brandel is in progress, and there’s my note to her, so I want to give you a little bit of background to exactly how Naviance works.
So you are going to continue to do your college applications through whatever portal that the college wants you to do them through, you’re going to fill out your college applications whether it’s common app or through their website, you can access those websites through this portal here as well and get to their admissions if that’s what you choose to do.
So once you’re doing your college applications, what you’re doing in Naviance is to connect Louis Palmer High School to those accounts, and it’s an one-stop shop for all of faculty and staff to be able to upload one time everything and then be able to send it off, so what it does is that Naviance connects to the common app.
Once you submit your request, we upload your transcripts and the school profile letters of recommendation and send them off through Naviance, and an autumn connects to your common app account, these schools that don’t have common app are in the Naviance edocs database with a portal, whenever we upload everything and it sends it to them, it automatically goes to their admissions application portal through here.
So that is how all of this works, so you are still going to be doing your applications through your normal way, and we are using Naviance edocs to upload your documents and send them off, and the point behind it is to be able to get these done more quickly, and for us to be able to keep tracking of the status of everybody’s applications a little bit easier.
It’s easier for us, if you come down and have questions about it, we can tell you what the status is, but you will also be able to see the status as well, so I hope that this clears up some of the concerns and some of the questions about Naviance, it is a great way to submit your college applications and to request those letter letters of recommendation from your teachers.
It makes it an easy way for teachers to upload those things quickly for you, please make sure that once you request your transcript, you have only done that if you’ve completed your application to your college, and you need to come down and see Mrs. Shaka, once you’ve sent in that request to pay your transcript fee, none of your stuff will be submitted until you come down and see Mrs. Shaka and pay that fee.
That is your last step in order to do that, please remember to allow at least two weeks for teachers in requesting letters of recommendation as they get lots of requests, and it takes a little while to get things done, so make sure that you meet with them in person.
If you have any questions about anything, come down and see me in student services, I also have a step-by-step sheet that walks you through this process, but I hope this article helps clarify a few things for you, thanks and see you next time.
