I’ll be showing you how to add a domain name to office 365. A domain name will allow you to use your own personal email address, if you do not have a domain name, you should register one before proceeding. The first thing you need to do is to log on to office 365 by visiting portal Microsoft online.com.
You can enter your username and password. You can click on domains, it is located on the left hand side under management. First of all, I’m going to click on add a domain, in this instance, I’m going to use my own personal domain which is Dean Spencer.co.uk.
I am going to click Next. The first step is to verify the domain. If you click on general instructions, this will instruct you how to add a text record to the domain name, it will be used to verify the domain name against office365. You can find the destination. The first thing I’m going to do is to select that and copy. My domain is hosted with tag adapt.
I will go to the tag adapt control panel. I will add a txt record. You need to make sure that there’s no space and click Submit. The txt record has been added. Once this step is complete, you can go back to add a domain, you can go down to the bottom of the screen and click verify.
Depending on the company you are with to host your domain name, this process can take anything between 15 minutes and 72 hours. The first time you click verify to verify the domain name, it may fail if the text record hasn’t propagated across the internet. If I click verify, this is verified, it’s asking me what services I want to use.
I can choose between exchange online and link online, I will click Next and close that. You can see my domain name, it has been verified. The second stage is to configure the DNS within the domain which will allow it to work within office 365.
I’ll click back on the domain. At the top, you’ll see DNS settings, these are the settings that needed to add to the domain name. First of all, you have an MX record. The easiest way of doing thisis to copy and paste. You can do the paste. You need to make sure that there’s no spaces at the end and click Submit, you can go back to the domain properties.
The next is a cname, the host name is autodiscover, you can click it to see our cname and hostname. I am going to copy and add txt record. We need a service record, this is a little bit more complicated. We’ve got the option to add service record. The weight is 100, the port is 5.061, we can click Submit. The service has been added. You’ve got a host name and points to address, you can copy this.
You can see the final C name and the hostname, you can copy and paste it on the target and click Submit. That is the process. You will see the domain name, txt records, MX records, C names and service records. If this process is unavailable to you, your web development company, your IT support company or your ISP will carry out this process for you.
You can click back on domain properties and return to domains list. You will see that the domain name is verified. You can click on users, you can select an email address, this one is using, the old email address is assigned by Microsoft, you can click on edit.
You can select the domain name that you wish to use. The domain name is now available.
