Welcome to this overview of office 365 for IT administrators. The new office 365 administration portal provides improved ease of management for IT professionals, you can have configured users mailboxes, site settings, downloads and more all from a single web-based interface.

You can monitor service health and maintenance activities with an easy to read dashboard and customizable reports, let’s take a look. As an administrator, when you log on to the office 365 portal, you’ll enter the admin center, from here, you can access the office tools you use most as well as monitor the health of all the office applications in your organization. From this blue navigation bar, you have easy access to all the services available to you.

Outlook allows you to check your email and monitor administrative alerts from a new easy-to-use web interface, calendar gives you access to your calendar and events. People section takes you to your contacts and global address list which includes everyone in your organization. From newsfeed, you can follow discussions within your organization and track websites and documents, this is the social networking page for your activities within the organization.

Skydrive is an online service that lets you store, share and manage documents in the cloud. When you click a document link, you can preview that document and then edit it, share it or follow it in your newsfeed. Site takes you to team sites and public website including all the sites you’re following. In the example, several different sites are being followed, you can click any link to go to that site.

You have immediate access to the office store where you can download applications to deploy in your organization, you can also go directly to office.com, it is the Microsoft Office home page, let’s return to the admin Center. We can do that from the admin drop-down list in the blue bar. You have access to your exchange link and SharePoint administrator portals.

On the right side of the page, you can see a number of administrator shortcuts and resources available for the most frequently used administrative functions, on the left side, links make it easy to navigate the admin Center, let’s look at some of the key features that will help you get started with office 365 quickly.

Setup makes it easy to move your organization to office 365, most midsize businesses should use basic setup which gives step-by-step instructions for setting up a domain, mailboxes, user access and DNS for email delivery. If you have a more complex IT environment, you can complete the setup manually with the custom setup link.

Since most midsize businesses we asked say that they like a simple setup process, we created the basic setup option, let’s drill a little deeper to see what it entails. This page walks you through the optional steps to synchronize your local Active Directory with office 365 so that users can sign in using their corporate credentials and be managed by the same policy settings, let’s return to the basic setup page where the next step is to set up user access.

Today this step points to a help link that explains how to walk users through the process of setting up office 365 for their desktop as well as how to connect their phones and tablets. However, Microsoft is working to add functionality to help IT administrators set up their users’ desktops and phones.

The final required step to move your organization to office 365 is to configure your DNS for mail delivery, Microsoft is working to include step by step set up to help administrators through the process. Office 365 makes it simple to set up anti-malware and anti-spam policies, exchange has default security settings, but editing them is easy. For instance, the default policy allows exchange to take action when malware is detected, you can change the automatic response when malware is detected.

For example, you can decide which types of users are notified about harmful messages, you can also set up a custom malware alert message for different users such as internal centers versus external senders. Let’s see how to customize your spam filters.

You have default spam policies that are easy to edit, you can customize actions that are taken in response to spam emails. For example, spam messages can be automatically sent to specific folders and quarantined for however long you choose. You can even block emails written in different languages or sent from different countries.

Advanced Options lets you set specific conditions for marking messages as spam and actions to take when these conditions are met, this includes a user friendly spam scoring system, connection filters and outbound spam settings can also be easily modified, let’s explore the outbound spam settings in more detail. You can set outbound spam preferences that determine which actions are taken when outbound spam sent from your organisation is detected.

You can view any messages that are quarantined by your filters and decide how to handle them, let’s return to the service settings homepage and explore ways to customize your mail flow settings. You can also dive deeper into SharePoint configuration using the SharePoint administrator center, let’s look at voice and conferencing options, these service settings help you configure video and conference calling through link. The link Administration Center helps you organize your remote meetings, you can easily customize Lync meeting invitations to meet your organization’s needs.

For instance, you can add your corporate logo or replace the default support URL with your own.
