I’m going to show you how to set up your gradebook now in schoology,this is important and it’s probably best to do before you start having students hand in work with schoology.
We’re looking at a course that I set up to show examples and you can see that I have four different types of assessment coming into my grade book. The final exam is at 30% of the weight of the grade,homework makes up 10% of the grade,quizzes is 10% and tests is 50%.
I set this up ahead of time,let me show you how to set this up. I’m going to go into another one of my courses here,I’ll go into this tests section here,hopefully I haven’t already set up the gradebook,let’s find it. I’m going to go into gradebook and find the gradebook setup,I already set up the gradebook. We can go into technology section and find gradebook setup.
You can see that I haven’t set up a gradebook here,I haven’t set up any categories for my assignments,I’m going to go ahead and add a category,I’m going to add an assignments category,I’m going to put calculated by percent.
I recommend you do this,to drop lowest means that it’ll drop out the lowest of assignment and in that category I’m not going to do that. I’m going to drop zero of them,I’m going to click create. Now I have an assignments category,I’m going to add a few more categorie,I’m going to show you how to divide them out.
Next I’m going to add a quiz category,I’m not going to drop any of them,there are discussion and test section,I might even add a observation section. I’ll make that. These categories are things that you’ll probably want to discuss within your department.
I should out of summative as an example,maybe I’ll call it exam for this one,I am going to split it up,we’re going to wait these categories,final exams and senior courses need to be at thirty percent of the course so I’m going to go ahead and set that at thirty.
I’m going to set discussions for five percent of my course weight,I am going to set tests for ten percent and quizzes for five percent,I’m going to go ahead and change these. You’ll notice that on the right hand side,these presenters are all going a bit wacky,don’t worry about that,they’ll all sort themselves out,that’s the observation. I am going to set it at five.
Assignments would be twenty five,now I have an even hundred percent,it all works out here on the right hand side. That is how I’ve set up a gradebook for my technology seven course,I might change this before class begins,but that gives you an example.
Whenever I create assignments or tests or discussions or even hand out a paper quiz,I’m going to track it all through my grade book. Now before I do anything else,I’m going to remember to click Save or it won’t remember all this here,I’m going to click save. At this point I can set up grading scales,there’s a letter grading scale that’s already here,I can click on that.
This is the one that they’ve set up and I can add my own based on the levels that we use,I need to add another level such as level four. I’m making this up,we used to find somewhere,I know this is wrong. Anyway you get the idea,I’m not going to say that I’m going to close it,that sets up different grading scales,if I want to grade something using ABC or grade something using levels,it allows me to do that.
I’m going to save my changes,I’m going to create an assignment now,I’m going to add it to my assignment section,I’m going to go to materials and find assignment. This one has already set up for me,I’m going to click on that one,I’m going to do it from scratch because that’s going to be the best way to it.
I’m waiting a second here,I’m going to say test assignment.it is testing it out,I will go to the description here to explain to children what I need them to do. I’m always going to leave everything at a hundred percent because at a glance it lets me know how well they’ve done on the assignment or test. It’s also something that Garfield recommends doing by the critical thinking.
I’m going to move to one hundred percent,I’ll make a due date here in September,it has to be after the fourth because the fourth is the first day of school. They get it on the fifth. I’m going to put category under assignments,now I can add files,here I can even go to grading options and I can use that AVC scale if I want to at this point .
You can see this factor,if I want to test to count for more than a typical test or assignment,usually it counts as one but this one is twice as big as a typical one,I am going to change the factor to two. This is something that you should discuss in your departments to decide how best to do that,I will create it,now I’ve created an assignment and I will put it under the correct category for my gradebook.
When I go into my gradebook,it’ll show up here,it’s called test assignment,it’s under the right category. We can see James White House is enrolled in my course and he’ll work his hardest to make sure he finish his assignments.
